This week I was mentoring some of our brightest and most enthusiastic young teachers sharing “54 Classroom Strategies” a book I wrote to demonstrate how to build confidence while teaching any subject.
Digitally savvy and current in their thinking ,these newly qualified teachers are exactly what the profession needs. However I was left concerned that they will not stay long. Working all the hours they can during the week, they find that is not enough and lose out on their weekend too.
Cuts and countless demands which affect too many in the profession put needless pressure on teaching and the interaction with young people.
We need our teachers to be relaxed so that they can observe what is happening in the classroom and gain a real appreciation of how each child learns. That is not possible when they are under such pressure just to ” get the job done”
In every organisation I have ever been involved with the best results have always been achieved when we asked the people who interact with the clients most how things should be done. Intuitively they know. So are we listening to teachers ?
One of my favourite books of all time in Education is Guy Claxton’s Hare Brain Tortoise Mind. In it he describes how the mind takes in information and gains understanding over a longer period of time and the countless to do lists and pressure to get everything done are counter productive.
The hare ended the race first so why are we rushing?

Forum sounds a great idea in principle but not sure that they really have the time to participate in practice. A facebook page where they can add or download some good teaching ideas may work better
